Home vs. Away

November 30th, 2009

I just got back from New York, where I was visiting family for Thanksgiving. One thing that really struck me was how different it is to be visiting somewhere than to live in it. I guess that sounds pretty obvious, but I found that the way I interacted with my surroundings was completely different in New York. For one, I find that I really am engaged in my environment when I’m somewhere new. Typically, I’ll be tuned out when I’m riding the Chicago El, or walking downtown. But when I’m in a new environment, I start to pay attention to architecture, parks, and people in a completely different manner. I guess part of it is that everything’s new, and hits you a little more. But still, it made me think about whether I should be more involved with the place that I inhabit. I don’t know how long I’ll keep it up, but I’m going to start trying to experience Chicago more, even if it just means taking a new walking route from the train to my house.
