Giving and Receiving

December 23rd, 2009

With the holiday season here, gift-giving is often a topic of discussion — what to give, how much to give, who to give to, etc. are all questions that may arise. There are also those who are more concerned about what they will be getting from others — what should I be expecting, I wonder how much I’m worth in their minds, etc. are questions that may arise for them. Being in a materialistic society, it is often inevitable that we will have such thoughts. Equivalent trade is a prevalent concept — if they give me something then I’ll get them something, if I get them something then I should expect them to get me something in return. However, for this holiday season, let us try to separate ourselves from this concept and give a little something without expecting something in return. For instance, give a helping hand to someone or donate a little money to charity or just stop and listen to someone’s problems for some time. Anything will help so give it a try!
