From Seed To Plate

April 30th, 2010

This year, I decided to get my hands dirty. Really – I planted stuff. The first step was deciding what I wanted to grow. I checked online, and peas are thought to be pretty easy. As a first time agriculturalist, I figured whatever was simple was right for me. I bought some pea seeds, and set aside a patch in the garden where I would plant them. Over the weekend, I dug little holes, dropped the seeds in, and began impatiently waiting for the plants to emerge. In most ways, gardening is fun. But there’s also the agony of waiting. It’s like microwave popcorn that takes a month to finish popping. Overall, though, it feels pretty good to produce for yourself – even if it’s a single vegetable. Come June or July – who knows? – I’ll have created an edible foodstuff out of a tiny seed.
