Graduation Day…

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

After four years, the day has finally arrived and now I enter a new stage of my life. Today is my graduation day. Now it’s true that I haven’t had school in a week, but this ceremony is the official end to my high school career. As I look back on all my days spent in high school, I must say that they weren’t horrible and my only regret is falling asleep in Philosophy class because that was almost my downfall this year. I’m not one of those sentimental types that start crying, but I can understand why some do after four years of shared experiences. I guess I’m too over come with a sense of accomplishment and excitement for what comes next. So whether you are graduating this year or maybe not for awhile, just remember to roll with the punches and enjoy it while you can because once it’s over there’s no going back.

Operation Cross Country

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Recently, the FBI had a three-night initiative called Operation Cross Country. This was a nationwide sweep aiming to save children from prostitution. This is the third such operation — it is part of a broader federal program against the sexual exploitation of children. The prostitutes that they rescued ranged from ages 13 to 17 and many of them were runaways that were forced into prostitution. A lot of the individuals rescued in this operation had no source of support from family or friends. Their “pimps” treated them badly, yet due to their lack of support, they had no one to turn to for help in the situation.

Since 2000, there has been a 51 percent increase in the number of crisis calls to the National Runaway Switchboard relating to prostitution. NRS offers confidential, judgment free support for youth at risk in any situation.

Hello. Hola. 你好. こんにちは. Bonjour.

How often have you heard or seen the presence of another language in your surroundings? Do you personally speak another language? Have you asked someone what they were saying or has anyone asked you what you were saying? With so many different cultures in our society and an emphasis on learning a foreign language in school, the presence of another language isn’t all that rare anymore.

Language often becomes a barrier in communication, though that need not be the case all the time. I perceive those questions as a desire to understand one another. Even if you speak the same language as someone else, if you aren’t trying to understand each other, it’s still useless. Language can only serve as a means for communication, what’s important is the individual’s desire to communicate their feelings with others. No one can understand how you feel and what you’ve experienced if you don’t tell them. Same goes for any problems that you might have – if you don’t try and solve them or find help, it’s unlikely that anyone can know what’s wrong.

Here’s when the NRS Hotline may be able to help you: if you find it too difficult to describe your problems to those close to you, perhaps try calling our hotline managed by trained volunteers. We will definitely try our best to help.

New Faces

Friday, August 1st, 2008

In case you’re wondering where Ruben has gone off to, he’s in charge of writing articles for Switched-On magazine for the next few weeks.

As for me, I’m Allyson. If you’ve read Switched-On magazine, you may recognize my name by some of the articles I’ve contributed. I’m a senior at my high school, so I like to believe that I’m a little less out of touch with youth today. But even at my age, at 17 years old, there’s no guarantee that I’ll reflect the perspectives exactly like that of youth in our generation.

For the next few weeks, I will be posting to this blog about various topics. Like Ruben, I will occasionally post about the current article in Switched-On magazine. At times I’ll post about some other topics that might be of interest to readers out there, and sometimes I’ll post about the National Runaway Switchboard as well.
