New Faces

Friday, August 1st, 2008

In case you’re wondering where Ruben has gone off to, he’s in charge of writing articles for Switched-On magazine for the next few weeks.

As for me, I’m Allyson. If you’ve read Switched-On magazine, you may recognize my name by some of the articles I’ve contributed. I’m a senior at my high school, so I like to believe that I’m a little less out of touch with youth today. But even at my age, at 17 years old, there’s no guarantee that I’ll reflect the perspectives exactly like that of youth in our generation.

For the next few weeks, I will be posting to this blog about various topics. Like Ruben, I will occasionally post about the current article in Switched-On magazine. At times I’ll post about some other topics that might be of interest to readers out there, and sometimes I’ll post about the National Runaway Switchboard as well.

If You Need Someone To Listen

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

All right, so I’ve talked a little about the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) in some of my previous posts and I think you may have an idea what it’s all about. As for those who would like more clarification or info on it, I thought I’d take this opportunity to tell you more about NRS because if you want to talk to someone or are looking for help NRS can help with any of the topics addressed on Switched-On.

Having volunteered at NRS is really what makes me certain that they have the resources to help you with pretty much anything life throws your way, and I know that you’re thinking I’m only promoting NRS in this blog because I volunteer there but that’s not the case. Not only does NRS provide you with a listening ear, but they also have access to countless resources (I’m sure there’s a specific number, but its still big) [Editor’s note – over 15,000 resources!].

Now I’ve said “resources” a couple of times so let me be a little more specific. By resources I mean they have access to locate places that can help you by providing shelter, counseling, and help with any of your specific needs. You can also call asking for info on any legal issue that you may be dealing with like emancipation, custody, or info on any laws in your particular state.

So, if you think you may need help don’t hesitate to call especially if you don’t have any idea what your options are because the person answering the phone will help you figure that out, as well as help you execute a plan to get to where you want to be.

Behind The Curtain

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

You’ve probably begun to wonder who is behind this wonderful blog.

Well, as I have said in a previous post, this blog, along with the rest of Switched-On, is written for teens, by teens.  So let me tell you a bit about myself. As you may have already guessed, my name is Ruben and I am 16 years old, soon to be 17. As for hobbies, I’m into photography (but of course what angst-ridden teen isn’t).  Recently, I’ve started to take guitar lessons so that I can become a triple threat.

I am now more focused on my future, and kind of figuring out my life and what’s to come. I got involved with Switched-On after becoming a volunteer liner at the National Runaway Switchboard, which is the organization that sponsors this magazine. I started volunteering at the National Runaway Switchboard initially to complete a service hour requirement, but after experiencing being a liner and helping teens, I decided to get more involved by working on this blog. So there you have it – the person behind the recent posts.  I’d really like to do a post about what you have to say about the latest issue of Switched-On or anything else on your mind.  I’ve also been wondering what, if anything, you are doing to prepare for life after high school.

So What’s Next?

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

By now I’m guessing you’ve looked through Switched On at all the different articles and you’re asking yourself, “What else can I do here?”  Well, I’ll tell you.
Respond to the articles.  We want to keep the website interesting and relatable with our readers, so it’s crucial that we hear what you have to say.
You can leave a comment about an article or even participate on the poll on our home page (look for the “Switched On” link on the right).  I encourage you to leave comments on this blog about a post or an issue you would like to see discussed on the blog.
Also, feel free to send us an email suggesting an issue to be the topic for one of our articles.  Don’t feel weird about saying or asking anything because we have a bunch of perfectly qualified people responding to those letters, and don’t think it’s just a bunch of old people reading what you write because many of our articles, as well as this blog, are written by youth your age.
If you find your thirst isn’t quite quenched for Switched On, then visit our Myspace and Facebook pages, and be our friend. All right, so I’m looking forward to reading all the comments you guys leave and I’ll be responding to them as well, so check back to see my response and for an all-new post later this week.
