Mom’s Binge Drinking?

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

I know there was a blog that is just recent about binge drinking. Here’s my take: so I’m in a class called AVID in my school. It helps us prepare for college and to be a good student. So since it is our second semester in our senior year we are pretty much done with important things. Now we just talk about issues in life. The first one we talked about is binge drinking. We watched a movie on it called “30 Days” (I’m sure you heard of that Super Size Me movie, it’s the same director/guy). In the movie it was about a mother of three children, one daughter in college, who decides to binge drink for four days each week for a month. She is doing this to prove to her daughter, who binge drinks to the max, that it is bad. In the end I think this movie is really stupid. First, I would never treat my mother horribly ever or tell her that I binge drink, black out and do it all over again. Then if I were the mother I would be very angry with my daughter for even doing such things that I would have to do something about it. It was a good movie though but should have been made better.

Exercising Daily

Friday, March 19th, 2010

I’m hardly someone I would consider endowed with plenty of free time. I joke sometimes that I don’t even have time to do my own homework, so sparse is my free time. I struggle sometimes to integrate a decent exercise plan into my already filled schedule.

Now that the weather has become more bearable, however, I’ve been trying, lately to exercise more. Instead of setting aside an hour to work out at a gym, which I don’t really have time for, I’ve been walking to all my classes instead of taking the bus or the car. It takes me around 10 to 15 minutes to walk to my classes, so that’s 10-15 minutes of exercise.

Since I don’t have time to set aside for exercising for longer than 15 minutes at an interval, I figured that I might as well try spreading out any activities. So far, it seems to be an effective plan.

The Aftermath of Suicide

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

It’s often said that tragedies could have been prevented had this or that been done, had this been the case and not the other. But once a tragedy has struck, there is no going back. You cannot turn back as you do on a road, contemplating another path. There is no way to rewrite the events that have occurred, except in the imagination.

A suicide is a tragedy, both in what drives an individual to commit suicide, and the act itself. But most of all it is the aftermath that is most fraught with sadness, loss. To lose one person is to unravel a part of a web. As John Donne wrote in one of his meditations, “No man is an island, entire of itself”.

To one who is already in an irrational state, it is difficult to believe that the loss of their life matters to anyone. To some who have been in so much pain, it may be easy to see that the permanent conclusion outweighs the probable impact their loss of life will have on the people around them.

Sometimes those who have been left behind by their loved ones who have taken their lives are themselves plagued with such thoughts in the aftermath. Why? Because the pain of suicide never ends. The pain of loss is never concluded by death.

Binge Drinking

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Every year, many people flock to parties and bars on St. Patrick’s day, a holiday that has become an excuse to drink excessively. Even if you are old enough to drink legally, binge drinking has many risks associated with it.

Drinking tickets are given if you are seen to be a disruption to the public and if you are under legal drinking age, and the fines can be pretty steep depending on where you are. Other legal punishments are possible for binge drinking, depending on the discretion of the police and other legal officers.

But even more damaging than the money woes that can be associated with binge drinking are the physical woes that can be incurred. Alcohol poisoning can be a deadly consequence of binge drinking. According to the Mayo Clinic, the symptoms include confusion, vomiting, seizures, slow breathing, irregular breathing, blue-tinged/pale skin, low body temperature, and unconsciousness.

If you know anyone with these symptoms after binge drinking, call 911 immediately.
