Exercising Safely When It’s Hot

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

I get up early in the morning when it is cooler outside and I go run a mile. After that I usually do pull ups, push ups and sit ups. I don’t know about you but, I would rather prefer doing exercises when its around seventy or eighty degrees versus when it is ninety or one-hundred degrees outside. I also do exercises in the evening too. Sometimes I go to a high school track and do hundred meter dashes with a speed chute harnessed around my chest, and get about 11 other friends and play football games smaller in size, though no blockers, just ball carriers, because we have no pads. Lastly my final drill is pretty simple – it’s bike riding. I would ride my bike almost anywhere.

Truth about Smoking

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Beginning next year, high prices aren’t the only thing smokers will have to overcome to buy cigarettes. The government will start putting pictures of rotting teeth, destroyed lungs, and surgery patients on the covers of cigarette packages in an effort to curb smoking. For those of us who don’t smoke, this is a nice step forward, as secondhand smoke exposure will hopefully decline when even a few smokers quit because of the pictures. Plus, new generations will be exposed to the negatives of smoking before they start. At the same time, the pictures beg the question: why smoking should be legal at all, if it’s so disastrous for users? I know smokers, and I know they’d argue that they have the right to ingest what they want. But you could make the same argument for any of the hundreds of outlawed drugs. It seems like the one thing keeping cigarettes legal is inertia. They’ve been legal, so they should stay legal. But this approach ends up endangering the lives of smokers and nonsmokers, present and future.

Staying Active in the Summer

Thursday, June 16th, 2011

There are lots of reasons for staying in shape and being active over summer break. Reason number one when you get back to start in tryouts you will not be in any way shape or form be able to do any of the things they ask you to perform, so they can test your abilities in that sport. And if you haven’t been running or practicing or at least jogging some, you will be strained and your muscles will ache. You could not make the team or even pass out. Last year I had serious muscle aches the first week from not doing anything that summer break. But not this year – I have been running and doing excersises to keep me in some shape that I will need to play a contact sport. You don’t have to take this advice but it would be a very wise decision to do so. So, go get running.

Stay Cool This Summer

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

I know I said go outside and play and all but be smart. Drink a lot of water. Stay hydrated. Also, if you get to hot go inside or go in shade. Do whatever you can to not get sunburn. I also have a story about what heat can do to your body. I was at an overnight football camp where we practiced six hours everyday for three days. It was a low of 70 degrees at least, and a high of 80 to 90 degrees. I stayed hydrated and wore a cold wet skullcap under my helmet, but my roommate had not done anything. He passed out and had a fever the first day and had to go home. That’s why it is important to drink a lot of water this summer, not pop or Gatorade. Water is the best choice for any situation in the summer.
