Photoblogging

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Have you heard of DailyBooth? If not then let me enlighten you. In my vast treks across the World Wide Web, I have discovered a new exciting way to blog. Essentially, DailyBooth is like Twitter except not at all. It’s a photoblogging website that allows users to post pictures of themselves everyday, along with some quirky caption. Users can follow each other and receive updates on friends through pictures. People also take part in a project to take a photo of themselves everyday for a year, which leaves room for creativity and self-discovery. The website is a little over a year old, but steadily increasing their number of users. Web celebrities and YouTube stars have begun using the site to reach out to fans, but we regular people can also take advantage of it. So, if you enjoy taking photos of yourself and sending them to friends for them to comment on or reply with a photo of their own, then this is the site for you.

Google Maps

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

The other day, I was helping a teen who was calling NRS from a library. He had been stranded by a magazine sales crew. He had nowhere to stay for the night, and he hadn’t eaten in a day. He was in a pretty large city, though, so I was able to find him a shelter that would give him a bed, as well as a meal. The problem was, the teen was new to the city, and had absolutely no idea where he was, or where he had to go to get to the shelter. Making matters worse, he had no money for transportation. Luckily, when he gave me the name of the library he was calling from, I looked it up, and found it was only 6 blocks from the shelter. The teen and I worked together to map his route, which was only a ten minute walk. After the teen hung up, I was really struck by how amazing it is to be able to access such in depth resources, and how simple things like Google Maps can be incredibly useful.

Now in Smell-O-Vision!

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Avatar, James Cameron’s 3-D film, has grossed almost two billion dollars worldwide since opening in December. Critics and moviegoers alike tend to describe the experience as completely innovative, because of the visual effects Cameron used. In a sense, Avatar is a step forward for the movie industry. But what lies ahead could be way more exciting than a pair of 3-D glasses. Personally, I’ll be satisfied with a movie experience only when all five of my senses are catered to. I want smell, Hollywood! While you’re at it, throw in some gloves to simulate what I should feel. And however you want to do the taste part- just make it happen. I have no idea how, when, or if any of these will happen, but their creation would change movies from something you see into something you live. So, while you’re pleased with seeing the foliage of Pandora in lifelike dimensions, I won’t be happy until I can smell it.

Technology, Good and Bad

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Two small things are on my mind this week. One is the fact that so many stores are closing. There is Blockbuster, Waldenbooks/Borders, KB Toys, and some other stores. I find it sad and depressing that so many people are losing their jobs during this economic hardship we are going through. I also liked those stores. I did actually like to rent movies from Blockbuster. Now you have to rent everything from your TV or computer. That leads to no DVD players. So in some ways, technology isn’t helping so much as it’s taking away jobs and changing the way we do certain things.

But the next thing on my mind is that Avatar made a worldwide total to $1.841 billion. If people keep watching the movie it will beat Titanic. That is just amazing. I thought Avatar was a really good movie – and it was all technology! I am glad that people love that movie.
