Dentist’s Office

January 23rd, 2012

I had to go to the dentist last week, which is always a harrowing ordeal. First of all, there’s a buildup that makes me really nervous. I have to schedule the appointment, confirm the appointment, travel to the appointment, and sit in the waiting room, all the while thinking about how any of my seemingly healthy teeth could be secretly harboring a cavity or some other dental monstrosity. Then, when I finally get in the patient’s chair, with the sun-like light bulb shining directly in my eyes, I start perspiring as the dentist sternly tells me, with a tone of disappointment and disgust, that I clearly have not familiarized myself with the concept, much less the practice, of flossing (I do floss, but I think I have the mechanics wrong or something, because the dentist would not believe my assertions). It strikes me as strange that dentists are so direct with their patients and will baldly tell them to stop eating so much sugar, while doctors tend to be nice and roundabout and avoid telling the patient to stop shoving fast food in their mouths. In any case, regardless of my poor flossing technique, I escaped the dentist’s office with nary a cavity, which gave me a satisfied smile that I imagine creeped a couple people out on the train ride home.

Pigging out

January 22nd, 2012

Eating healthy is something many people talk to us about in many places that we may not necessarily listen too. It’s something that has become a very important topic in many places especially here in America. It’s not just about what we eat when we eat with friends, but when we eat in schools, with family, or by ourselves. Eating right isn’t just about watching our weight but about our body in the inside as well. In order to maintain a good healthy body we have to learn to eat right. Eating right can prevent many diseases as well as illnesses that we may come upon. So try to drink less soda and more water, try to eat fewer Chips and go for some fruits. Do small changes that can help your body in the long run.

Scared Straight

January 21st, 2012

Media can have an effect on people. I will admit certain types of music make me want to fight and certain types make me want to sleep. Music can set moods but aint nothing wrong with that. I’m talkin about like tv shows. Some things you see on tv makes your mind up. I mean you can watch gang documentaries and think they are cool and whatever. Then I saw this show called “Beyond Scared Straight”. You see, they throw these young thugs and dealers, etc., in with real folk doing real time for crimes they have done to try to change the kids minds. Honestly I don’t have anything against dealers, thugs, gang members, etc., but all I know is that I don’t want to even go through the jail scaring program so, you know I am not going to want to do any crimes. Just saying think before you do something serious.

Forced Books

January 20th, 2012

Reading, for me, is a pretty constant endeavor. During breakfast, on the train, in bed, and in other moments of freedom, I like to pick up a book. But there’s a strange phenomenon that goes on with my reading choices: when I don’t have to read the book, I want to read it more than when I’m told to read it. For example, last summer I read a pretty interesting history of the western world for fun. But when I got my reading assignments for that semester, which included another book on western history, I was less enthusiastic. I think this had less to do with repetition and more to do with the idea that if something is forced on you, it seems less desirable. I haven’t yet found a way to get too pumped up about my class’ book list, but it helps to take classes I’m genuinely interested in. Even though I might not experience the un-put-downable-book feeling when it’s a forced read, I’ll still be able to get through the book – and hopefully learn something.
