Walking for Runaways

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

Country singer Jimmy Wayne is no stranger to the experience of not knowing whether there will be a home to come back to at the end of the day. As a youth, Jimmy’s family was broken; his mother was incarcerated in a prison, his dad absent from his life. These experiences, along with the increasing number of people displaced by a lack of housing, inspired Jimmy Wayne to launch the Meet Me Halfway campaign.

In January, Wayne set out to walk, single-handedly, from Nashville, TN to Phoenix, AZ in an effort to raise awareness about the plight of youth made homeless. Money raised from the walk will be donated to charitable organizations that work with homeless youth.

The Earthquake in Haiti

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

This Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake occurred in Haiti that has led to thousands of deaths and catastrophic amounts of damage. It was centered at the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, which is a reason for the incredible damage and the enormous death toll. Rescue efforts and aid are being sent to the country to help clean up the shambles caused by the earthquake in the lives of all its citizens. A natural disaster has a way of causing great pain, but also the potential human begins have to help one another. Whether it is money, food, health care, or just good thoughts, the way people unite and look past all differences to see people in need of aid is one of the more astounding capabilities people have within them. We tend to focus on the things we do against each other and some choose to define humankind that way, but it is how we help each other that should truly define us as a species.

Giving and Receiving

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

With the holiday season here, gift-giving is often a topic of discussion — what to give, how much to give, who to give to, etc. are all questions that may arise. There are also those who are more concerned about what they will be getting from others — what should I be expecting, I wonder how much I’m worth in their minds, etc. are questions that may arise for them. Being in a materialistic society, it is often inevitable that we will have such thoughts. Equivalent trade is a prevalent concept — if they give me something then I’ll get them something, if I get them something then I should expect them to get me something in return. However, for this holiday season, let us try to separate ourselves from this concept and give a little something without expecting something in return. For instance, give a helping hand to someone or donate a little money to charity or just stop and listen to someone’s problems for some time. Anything will help so give it a try!

Mandatory Volunteering

Monday, October 12th, 2009

For many high schools and colleges, volunteering is often mandatory for advancement in your grade level or for passing a class. As far as I know, in Chicago Public Schools, forty hours of volunteering are the minimum number of hours in order to graduate from high school. Many students may find it unnecessary and a waste of time, especially if they can’t find anything they’re interested in — that can be pretty dull for forty hours. However, if utilized properly, these forty hours can be a valuable experience in your life. Personally, I was involved in a program in high school that required an additional 100 hours on top of the 40 hours for Chicago Public Schools. At first, I was just like how am I ever going to do this? But eventually I got it done over one summer volunteering at my local library. However, even after that, I continued to be involved in a variety of service learning projects since I got involved in a club focusing on this aspect. Honestly, I feel like it broadened my horizons a lot and was rather beneficial in the end so if you’re one of those who still haven’t dealt with the forty hours, try looking for something you’d be interested in — it goes much faster, trust me.
