Another Earthquake?

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

So I am sure everyone has heard about the earthquake in Chile. (It is like the 4th one this year! Why are so many happening?) But for the earthquake in Chile many people died, which is sad. What I don’t see is that no one is really panicking about it. They did have a bad earthquake many years ago so I guess they are prepared with disasters like that. Then there was a tsunami alert for Hawaii. People were rushed to go inland just for precautions. Nothing really happened that I have heard of. Then a couple days afterwards I hear about a huge storm a hit Europe, especially France. They were definitely not prepared for that storm. Now there is a different issue at hand. Because of the earthquake in Chile the earth’s axis moved 3 inches and the day is shorter by 1 millisecond. I told my grandma all about this news and she said something very interesting. The news is always focusing on the bad stuff. They only do it because they want high ratings. That is why you never hear about anything good.

Women’s History Month

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

So March is Women’s History Month. “Women’s History Month is an annual declared month in the United States that highlights Women’s history contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society.” I have two different opinions about that.

The first one is that I am glad that the United States has a month specifically to women, since a long time ago women weren’t seen as powerful nor should have any say for anything. As the women’s right movement progressed women stood up for themselves and contributed things to the new world. I think it is a good idea to recognize all the contributions that women have made over the many years.

My other opinion is from a guy’s perspective. A guy would see this and be jealous. Where is the men’s history month? Why aren’t there any celebrations for all the inventions that men made in history? Even though there are two different sides of opinions I still believe it is a good idea to highlight all the contributions women had made to society.

An Important Holiday, An Important Cause

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

February is one of the greatest months in the year, and not only for lovers of wet snow. These 28 monumental days represent a profoundly worthy cause – Return Carts to the Supermarket Month. I really can’t describe the shame, the anger, the betrayal I feel deep in my heart whenever I see stranded or stolen supermarket carts on the street. How will patrons shop? Where will they place their goods? What is this world coming to, when our wheeled-carrying-devices are fodder for theft? Am I supposed to balance 8 cereal boxes in my hand? Come on, people! February is an opportunity to atone for the sins committed against supermarket carts during the preceding 11 months. Working together, uniting against the forces that are subverting our shopping enjoyment, we can truly make a difference. So before the month is up, bring a cart back home. We’ll all be happier for it.

Olympic Pins and Needles

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

If you’ve ever wanted to see how pathetic your sledding adventures are in comparison to the pros, you’re in luck. The Winter Olympics are here, and they bring with them all the strange, mildly engaging, and thoroughly frightening sports you only watch every four years. Personally, I can’t watch the Olympics without cringing, flinching, or generally feeling somewhat unpleasant. Something about watching skiers helplessly soaring through the air, hundreds of feet up, upsets me. The same applies with lugers, who slide down ice upwards of 90 miles an hour. I know I can’t be the only one who finds ice skating terrifying, too. They’re wearing knife-shoes, pretty much. Plus there’s the biathlon. All you need to know about the biathlon is that it involves skis and guns. That’s gotta be dangerous, right? For the timid of those among us, at least there’s always curling.
