Scared Straight

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

Media can have an effect on people. I will admit certain types of music make me want to fight and certain types make me want to sleep. Music can set moods but aint nothing wrong with that. I’m talkin about like tv shows. Some things you see on tv makes your mind up. I mean you can watch gang documentaries and think they are cool and whatever. Then I saw this show called “Beyond Scared Straight”. You see, they throw these young thugs and dealers, etc., in with real folk doing real time for crimes they have done to try to change the kids minds. Honestly I don’t have anything against dealers, thugs, gang members, etc., but all I know is that I don’t want to even go through the jail scaring program so, you know I am not going to want to do any crimes. Just saying think before you do something serious.

Tattoos – Fad Without Meaning?

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

The other day I walked in on a discussion about tattoos. During this discussion, an issue was brought up about how teenagers and younger people nowadays don’t really have a meaning behind their tattoos and just do it for the sake “being cool” versus before when each tattoo had a significant meaning to the individual or was collected like art pieces. For instance, for someone a tattoo could be a reminder of their deceased loved ones or something that serves as a motivational symbol. Now, many tattoo the name of their boyfriend/girlfriend, random images that look cool, quotes that may seem interesting to them now, or other things that they may regret in the future for the sake of being cool. Of course, I’m not generalizing to all people, but it seems like this is the general fad. What do you think, are tattoos just a fad without meaning for most people nowadays or is it an exaggeration?

Basketball on…Christmas Day?

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

When the NBA announced the season was back on, I was excited. I’m not a huge fan, but I watch a few games and loosely root for the Bulls. This year, because of the lockout, the season starts with five games on Christmas day. Never mind the fact that Christmas, a Sunday, also plays host to a bunch of football games. I’m used to Thanksgiving and football, but Christmas being tied with sports seems a bit different. I don’t celebrate Christmas, so it’s not a big deal to me, but do most families want to spend 12 hours watching athletes on one of the most important holidays of the year? I don’t doubt that a ton of people will tune in, but I hope it’s something everyone in the house does together. It might sound dreamy, but I think holidays are about more than fun – they’re about togetherness. So by all means watch the Bulls trounce the Lakers – just do it with your family.

Sheltered?

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

I’m what some people would consider “sheltered,” well, in a certain sense of that word. As a child, I went to elementary school about two blocks away from my house and therefore my parents expected me to be home right after school or they could easily come get me. I didn’t get an allowance, and even when I asked to go out to play with my friends, my parents would just give me a look like why would you do that? It wasn’t until I went to a high school 30 minutes away by public transportation that I got an allowance, a cell phone (which I am currently still using), and was “allowed” to go out with my friends more (which really wasn’t a lot anyway). Public transportation was a new concept for me versus my other friends who have used it for a long time. Not that I’m saying being “sheltered” was necessarily a bad thing — I mean, I didn’t fall prey to anyone with drugs or alcohol, but it does bring some inconveniences in adjusting socially.
