Sexting Adults

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

At this point, even those of us who hardly pay attention to politics have probably heard about Anthony Weiner, the New York Congressman. Weiner sent sexual pictures to several different women, and after initially denying his actions he confessed to the public about them. His doings raise a lot of questions, simple and complex. For one, how could someone dumb enough to send lewd pictures to multiple women and think it wouldn’t be found out get elected to Congress? But more significantly, do the pictures mean anything politically? Should we care whether our representatives do this kind of stuff, if meanwhile they serve our country well? I think that different age groups will feel differently about the significance of Weiner’s pictures, considering that those of us who are just reaching voting age have different interpretations of privacy and propriety online and off. Where our parents see overexposure on a Facebook page, we see the sharing of information. Whether Weiner’s actions are interpreted as the former or the latter, as nasty or normal, will be shown in 2012, when he is up for reelection.

Facebook Safety

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

I don’t have a Facebook page, but I know about and how to keep yourself safe on it. Some weird stuff can go on there, and some cool stuff can go on there. Here’s the one thing – anything you say or put on somebody’s wall that’s really wrong can follow you forever and spread across the media you know media news, internet, papers and all that. I’m sure you don’t want that other kids be making fun of you and when you apply for a job they will Google and check your record. So, basically, you’re screwed for life. I’m not playing – this is legit! I wouldn’t want to be screwed for life – what about you? Don’t post anything unnecessary or inappropriate. These words could save you from prison, unemployment, or more likely making you look like a fool.

Keeping Facebook In Perspective

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

It’s bad enough that Facebook has completely taken over an entire generation’s free time, but now there’s “drama” on it. Facebook drama is about as important as that freckle on your arm so don’t even give it a second thought. The Internet has become the new talking-behind-someone’s-back, except there’s a public record of the exchange. Posting something mean on Facebook allows people to attack others without any real consequences besides hurt feelings. It can be done safely from home and is out of the schools and parent’s jurisdiction. The truth is that it is this generation’s rumor mill and the equivalent of passing around a mean note. It is unnecessary and can create even bigger problems for everyone since the speed of that harsh action can take seconds to reach a student body. Don’t do it and remember to think before you type because some misuse of Facebook can break a high school experience.

Parents Can Help

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Hiding things from our parents is natural. We don’t like them prying into our business. Even though our parents are just trying to protect us. There are so many cases where teens hide everything that is going on and end up getting into a lot of trouble. There is cyberbullying that is a huge problem and so is rape or kidnapping. Teens don’t tell their parents what is going on and many consequences happen. You hear on the news that a girl was threatened over the internet, it escalated, and she committed suicide. The parents always wonder what they could have done to help their child but it is always too late. I’m not saying tell all your business of what happens online to your parents. If you feel like you are in any sort of trouble tell your parents. They are there to help you when you need it, not always ruin your life.
